What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

At Q Factor Chiropractic, many of our patients suffer from pain throughout their bodies, especially in their joints. Myofascial release therapy is a form of massage that is designed to stretch the fascia, which are tight, connective tissues that allow the joints to properly function. It utilizes hands-on manipulation in order to enhance the blood flow and nerve conductivity in these areas of the body, alleviating any associated pain or inflammation while restoring the mobility of the affected area(s). Dr. Richard Channing the rest of our staff in Mesquite, TX, is proud to offer this incredibly beneficial treatment for patients who are struggling with their joints.

Is Myofascial Release Therapy Right for Me?

Throughout the consultation, we'll review your medical history and listen intently to your concerns before gauging whether or not myofascial release therapy is the correct form of treatment for you. Patients have used it to treat a number of issues, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Back Pain
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Disc Herniation

How is Myofascial Release Therapy Performed?

During myofascial release therapy, our staff will lightly massage the myofascia, seeking out any areas that feel stiff or tight. Once these areas are found, they will apply gentle pressure to the associated trigger point, which will release pressure and reduce tightness in the region. These trigger points may not be located near where the pain is primarily felt. However, our understanding of the entire network of muscles within the body allows us to pinpoint the precise area that should be targeted. This will be repeated several times on this and other trigger points until there is no longer any tension.

What Results Can I Expect from Myofascial Release Therapy?

Our patients generally feel better at the immediate conclusion of their treatment. However, additional sessions are usually required in order to keep the pain away for good. This could take anywhere from 4 – 12 weeks, with massages being scheduled about 1 – 3 times each week. It should be noted that chronic and severe conditions could require longer lengths of treatment as well as a higher frequency of sessions.

Myofascial Release Therapy FAQ

Is myofascial release therapy painful?
No, myofascial release should not be painful for patients at Q Factor Chiropractic. In fact, it is a very calming treatment. Some patients may feel tiredness or aches for about a day following a session as their body relieves inflammation and increases blood flow.

What makes myofascial release and a traditional massage different?
Myofascial release is specifically designed to release obstructions in the myofascial tissue rather than focusing strictly on the muscles. Often, the techniques and motions in a myofascial release session performed at our Mesquite, TX facility feel gentler and more deliberate than a traditional massage, which can provide a thorough, relaxing effect.

What should I do after a myofascial release session to ensure the best possible results?
Myofascial release will help loosen the fascia and increase blood flow to your trigger point areas of pain. To help your body properly conduct this process, Dr. Channing and his team recommend drinking plenty of water during the 24 hours after your treatment session.
